The prompt for this project was to create a product that utilizes lighting to change a space. My project partner and I came up with "Archie," an arched digital sundial that tells the approximate time in its shadow when placed in the sun.
This sundial was constructed by laser cutting sheets of acrylic and melting them together with acrylic adhesive. The arch itself consists of two curved supports and a kerf bent piece of acrylic with the hours of the day etched into it so that they cast a shadow. The rounded "petal" shapes act as spacers, allowing the sun to only shine through at particular angles and display the current hour.
Overall, I think this piece turned out well! I would like to come back to this prompt and play with lighting in other ways, taking the approach that the other teams chose of making products that produce their own light.
